Health & Wellness Workshops with U of A Nursing Students

Health & Wellness Workshops with U of A Nursing Students

Beginning in September, every Wednesday morning brings something a special to Aster Senior Center at Mesa Downtown. University of Arizona Nursing students take the lead on a weekly Health & Wellness Workshop, sitting down with you to talk through practical, everyday health topics — and in the process, both sides walk away better for it.

What to Expect

Each week from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, U of A nursing students present an engaging, informative session on a health and wellness topic designed specifically with older adults in mind. Topics vary week to week, but the goal stays the same: practical tips you can actually use, real answers to real questions, and simple, approachable ways to support your health and wellbeing. It's a low-pressure, conversational hour — come with questions, come to listen, or come for both.

Part of the Nursing Curriculum — With Real Purpose

These workshops aren't a one-off volunteer project. They're a part of the nursing students' curriculum at the University of Arizona, which means every session is intentional, prepared, and grounded in what these future nurses are actively learning in their coursework. For you, that translates into current, thoughtfully researched health information delivered with real care.

But the benefit runs both directions. For nursing students, this workshop is often one of their first real opportunities to sit across from older adults, listen to their questions and concerns, and practice communicating clearly and compassionately about health topics — skills that no textbook can fully teach. Learning to talk with patients is one of the most important and hardest-to-teach parts of nursing. These Wednesday mornings give students a real, low-stakes environment to build that skill with people who have plenty of life experience and plenty of questions of their own.

In other words: every time you attend, you're not just picking up useful health information for yourself — you're helping to shape the next generation of nurses. That's a meaningful trade, and one our participants consistently tell us they enjoy being part of.
