Aster Neighbors Program: Support That Helps You Stay Home and Independent
For most older adults, staying in the home they know — surrounded by their own routines, their own neighborhood, their own memories — is the goal. But independence doesn't mean going it alone. Sometimes it just takes a ride to an appointment, a friendly voice on the phone, or a little extra help around the house to make staying home not just possible, but sustainable. That's what Aster's Neighbors Program is here for.
What The Neighbors Program Offers
The Neighbors Program connects older adults with volunteers who provide practical, everyday support — the kind that makes a difference in daily life. Services include:
Essential Transportation Rides to the doctor, pharmacy, and grocery store — the trips that keep health and daily life on track, provided by a volunteer you can count on.
Companionship Visits Friendly visits built around good conversation, a game of cards, a puzzle, or a cup of coffee. Simple time together that goes a long way.
Telephone Support Regular check-in calls from a kind volunteer — a chance to share stories, stay connected, and know someone's thinking of you.
Visual Assistance Support with home tasks for individuals with low vision or blindness, helping make everyday routines safer and more manageable.
Why It Matters
A ride to a doctor's appointment can mean the difference between managing a health condition and falling behind on it. A weekly phone call can be the difference between isolation and connection. The program is structured around the idea that independence isn't about doing everything alone — it's about having the right support in place so you can keep living life on your own terms, in your own home.

Volunteers Keep Neighbors Going
Programs like this run on people willing to show up for their neighbors. Whether it's driving someone to a pharmacy run, sitting down for a game of dominoes, or picking up the phone for a weekly chat, volunteers are the heart of this program, and hours are flexible to fit around your schedule. If you've been looking for a meaningful way to give back in your own community, this is it.
