Independence has always defined Sandra’s life. Originally from Texas, she worked at a local department store in Mesa for over 40 years, raising her two children on a single income and seeing them both off to their own independence.
But aging has brought new challenges and uncertainties. Her sister, who was her only local relative, passed away in 2022. Her children call and check in, but they live out of state. She faces new health concerns, rising expenses, and growing isolation. “I’ve always done things on my own, but it’s getting harder,” she shared.
A friend in her apartment complex gave Sandra a copy of Aster’s newsletter, and she decided to visit the Senior Center for lunch and good company. That one small decision had lasting positive effects. There, she learned about Aster’s Benefits Enrollment Center.
Unfortunately, her health took a turn for the worse, leaving her more isolated and with greater financial uncertainty than ever before. But she wasn’t in it alone. She called Aster, and an Outreach Specialist came directly to her apartment to help her navigate community programs and resources, freeing up funds from her fixed income for medical care. “I love that they come to me, because I can’t drive anymore,” she shares.
Aster’s team recognized that Sandra needed more than just resources - she needed a support system. Her lack of mobility meant that she was becoming isolated. They connected her to Aster’s Neighbors program, where she was paired with Gina, a volunteer, who visits regularly to spend time with her and take her grocery shopping. “Gina is a true friend to me, she really cares. She’s dependable.”
This combination has proven essential to Sandra’s continued independence, something she is proud of, and she is glad to have the support. “Every time I needed them [Aster], they had answers for me. They’ve helped me solve a lot of problems.”
