Arizona summers are no joke—especially for older adults. High temperatures can pose serious health risks, but with the right precautions, you can stay safe, comfortable, and well-prepared all season long.
1. Slow Down
Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (usually midday to late afternoon). If you need fresh air, choose shaded outdoor spots or rest indoors where it’s coolest.
2. Dress Lightly
Choose light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics. It helps your body regulate temperature and avoid overheating.
3. Eat Light
Stick to lighter meals like fruits, salads, and cold dishes. If you're bringing food outdoors, use ice packs or insulated bags to prevent spoilage.
4. Stay Hydrated
Drink water regularly—even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you. If you're on a restricted fluid intake, check with your doctor before increasing your water consumption.
5. Seek Air Conditioning
If your home isn’t air-conditioned, spend time at cooling centers like public libraries, malls, or senior centers. Staying cool indoors can be a lifesaver.
6. Use Fans Wisely
Fans can provide comfort, but when temperatures rise above 90°F, they can increase dehydration if used improperly. Use them in combination with other cooling methods—not as a substitute for air conditioning.
7. Limit Sun Exposure
Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours. Stay in the shade when outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and take cool showers to help regulate your body temperature.
