The holidays bring higher costs for just about everyone. Research consistently shows that the price of basic goods rises around this time of year, which makes things harder for those on a fixed income. Thankfully, there are strategies and resources that can help you keep eating the food you need to stay well.
Start Before You Shop
A little planning goes a long way. Take 15 to 20 minutes each week to plan your meals and write a grocery list of what and how much to buy, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
Once you’re at the store, a few habits can stretch your budget:
- Compare unit prices. The unit price on the shelf sticker lets you compare different brands and sizes to find the best value.
- Bulk up your meals. Adding beans and canned or frozen vegetables makes dishes more filling and helps your food dollars go farther.
- Read the Nutrition Facts label. It helps you go easy on added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
Cook Ahead, Store Safely
Cooking ahead can save both money and effort. Prepare some dishes early and set the extras aside for a second, effortless meal later in the week.
Those extras only help your budget if they are stored safely. Keep these guidelines in mind:
- Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
- Eat refrigerated leftovers within 3 to 4 days.
- Store leftovers in small, shallow containers so they cool quickly.
- Freeze what you will not finish in time.
The reason for the two-hour rule is the “Danger Zone.” Between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, bacteria can multiply quickly, so food left out too long is not worth the risk.
