Join Us for a Free News Literacy Workshop
Between social media, 24-hour news cycles, and algorithms designed to keep us scrolling, it's harder than ever to tell what's real, what's spin, and what's outright false. Aster is partnering with News Literacy for Arizona to bring a free, nonpartisan workshop to Senior Centers this September — staying informed shouldn't mean feeling overwhelmed or unsure of what to trust.
About the Workshop
News Literacy for Arizona teaches news literacy through a single, focused session — there is no follow-up homework, no partisan angle, just a set of practical tools for navigating today's media landscape. The workshop runs 50 minutes and is free and open to attendees ages 60 and older.
The training covers five key points:
- The importance of news literacy — why it matters now more than ever
- The danger of disinformation — how to recognize it and why it spreads
- The power of algorithms — how the platforms we use every day shape the information we see
- The role of journalism in a democracy — why a free press matters
- How to build a diverse news diet — practical steps for getting a fuller, more balanced picture
Through news literacy, we can all become more resilient against disinformation and cleverly disguised propaganda — regardless of where we fall on the political spectrum. This is a nonpartisan workshop, focused on critical thinking skills rather than any particular viewpoint.
