Thank You, Volunteers: The Heart Behind Everything We Do
Every day, something meaningful happens across the East Valley — a warm meal arrives at a homebound senior's door, a friendly face shows up for a conversation that might otherwise not happen, and an older adult gets a safe ride to a medical appointment they couldn't have reached alone.
None of it happens without our volunteers.
The Reach of Volunteer Service
At Aster, volunteers are not a supplement to our work — they are central to it. Across every program and service we deliver, the presence of a dedicated volunteer is what transforms a transaction into a human connection.
Through our Meals on Wheels program, volunteers carry more than food to the doorsteps of homebound seniors. They carry continuity — a familiar face, a moment of warmth, and the quiet reassurance that someone in the community is paying attention.
At our Senior Centers, volunteers serve hundreds of meals each week, contributing to spaces where older adults gather, laugh, and stay engaged with the world around them.
Through our Neighbors Program, volunteers provide friendly visits and transportation to important appointments — the kind of practical support that helps seniors maintain their independence and dignity.
More Than Hours Logged
Over the past year, more than 320 volunteers contributed a combined 20,000 hours of service to Aster Aging. That number is striking. But the impact it represents goes deeper than any metric can fully capture.
For an older adult navigating the challenges of aging — perhaps living alone, perhaps facing declining health, perhaps simply uncertain about what comes next — a consistent volunteer presence offers something that no program can manufacture: the feeling of not being alone.
Aster's volunteers offer interaction, kindness, and a steady reminder that the broader community cares about its older members. That reassurance matters enormously.
Inspired by Their Dedication
Our volunteers give their time because they believe in something — in the dignity of older adults, in the value of community, and in the idea that everyone deserves to age with support and connection around them.
We see that belief in action every single day. And we are deeply grateful for it.
A National Standard for Volunteer Excellence
Aster Aging is proud to be an AL!VE and ASU Lodestar Center–accredited Service Enterprise — a nationally recognized distinction that reflects our commitment to volunteer management done right.
The Service Enterprise Initiative is a rigorous accreditation program administered nationally by AL!VE (the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Management) and Points of Light, and delivered in Arizona through the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation. To earn accreditation, organizations undergo a research-based diagnostic evaluation, extensive team training, and individualized coaching — all focused on the strategic and effective integration of volunteers into an organization's core operations.
Accredited Service Enterprises represent the top 11% of nonprofits in the nation when it comes to volunteer management and organizational performance. The designation signals something specific: that volunteers at Aster aren't filling gaps — they are a deliberate, well-supported, and central part of how we deliver on our mission.
For our volunteers, this means they are joining an organization that takes their time seriously, invests in meaningful roles, and is committed to making their service as impactful as possible. For the seniors we serve, it means the people showing up at their doors and in our centers are part of a thoughtfully managed program — not an afterthought.
