Supporting Confidence in Your Health

October is Health Literacy Month: Supporting Confidence in Your Health

Every October, communities across the country recognize Health Literacy Month, a time dedicated to promoting the skills and resources that help people understand and use health information effectively. Health literacy goes beyond reading a pamphlet or listening to instructions from a doctor; it is about being able to access, evaluate, and apply health information in ways that support your well-being.

Why health literacy matters

As we age, managing health can become more complex. Medications, appointments, and care instructions often multiply, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Without clear information and the right tools, important details can be missed. This can lead to medication errors, delayed care, or unnecessary stress for both older adults and their families.

Strong health literacy skills can:

  • Prevent mistakes with prescriptions and treatments

  • Ensure timely access to care

  • Improve communication with healthcare providers

  • Support long-term independence and quality of life
