The Older Americans Act Turns 60

In 1965, Congress passed the Older Americans Act (OAA) to address the growing need for community-based social services for older adults. This important legislation created federal funding to support states and local organizations in planning and delivering services, conducting research, and training professionals working with aging populations.

The Older Americans Act is a key funding source for Aster Aging’s programs and services. Thanks to OAA support, Aster operates Senior Centers, runs the Meals on Wheels program, manages the Senior Nutrition Program, and offers many other critical services designed to support older adults in the East Valley.

On July 14, 2025, the Older Americans Act will celebrate 60 years since it was first signed into law. For over 46 years, Aster Aging has relied on this vital legislation to build and maintain a strong network of community programs. These services have supported generations of seniors, helping them live independently and stay connected. The OAA has empowered organizations across the country to develop community-based models of service to best address local needs and develop lasting relationships.

The demand for Aster’s programs continues to grow. In the past year alone, more than 7,500 older adults benefited from the four core programs Aster provides. Funding through the Older Americans Act remains essential for Aster to maintain and expand its services to meet the growing need.

The daily impact of OAA funding in our community is significant. Aster delivers hundreds of meals directly to seniors every weekday. In addition, we provide essential wellness checks for some of the most vulnerable older adults in Mesa, ensuring that they have a local team who cares. Our Senior Centers host fun and engaging activities across many areas of interest. Daily subsidized lunches provide important opportunities for social interaction, ensuring seniors do not have to eat alone.

As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act, we celebrate the important role it plays in supporting Aster Aging’s mission to serve older adults in the East Valley. The OAA continues to provide the foundation for programs that improve the quality of life for thousands of seniors every year.
