Preventing Dehydration

Adapted from Nutrition.VA.gov’s “Preventing Dehydration in Older Adults”

Staying hydrated is always a challenge here in the desert, and the soaring summer temperatures make it even harder. These simple tips can help you stay healthy and feel better all season long.

What Should I Drink?

  • At least half of what you drink each day should be water.

  • Choose water instead of sugary drinks. Tap, bottled, unsweetened, or sparkling water all count.

  • Need more flavor? Add berries or slices of lime, lemon, or cucumber to your water.

Good choices include:
• Water or calorie-free flavored water
• Fruit or vegetable juices
• Milk
• Decaffeinated or herbal teas
• Low-sodium broths or soups

Poor choices include:
• Canned soups (often high in sodium)
• Soft drinks and sports drinks high in sugar
• Caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate
• Alcohol

Simple Ways to Drink More

• Use large, easy-to-hold cups
• Keep a glass of water at your bedside or in your sitting area
• Choose a variety of fluids based on your preferences
• Drink fluids both during and between meals
